Developed Recreation Grant Program

Gunnison County: $45,000

Funds awarded for the development of Shady Island River Park. The project will include a new, safe river access point for anglers and boaters as well as a parking area, bathrooms, trails, picnic pavilion and tables, a children’s nature play area, and 19 campsites.

Gunnison Valley OHV Alliance of Trail Riders: $5,000

Funds awarded to complete the development of the Hartman Rocks Terrain Park. The work to be completed includes re-working the jump faces, improving the track surface, and completing the infill of features to provide a safer experience.

Town of Crested Butte: $30,000

Funds awarded for the addition of four heated changing rooms at the Big Mine Ice Arena for the Valley’s youth and adult hockey programs. Simultaneously, this project will help alleviate congestion in the near-by Warming House which has long hosted hockey and Nordic participants.

Community Collaboration Grant Program

Gunnison Valley Mentors: $2,500

Funds awarded to support Gunnison Valley Mentors weekly After-School Program and monthly Group Recreation Activities. The programs enable youth (ages 6-17) to engage in cultural and physcial recreation opportunities.

Gunnison High School Soccer: $3,320

Funds awarded to support the newly developed Gunnison High School Boys Soccer Team. The team has been added on a probationary basis for four seasons, after which point it will become a full-funded and completely sustained team supported by the Gunnison School District.

Gunnison County Substance Abuse Prevention Project (GCSAPP): $4,000

Funding provided to grow the Choice Pass Shcholarship Program, helping Gunnison County youth (6th – 12th grade) access cultural and physical recreation opportunities.

West Elk Hockey Association: $1,600

Funds awarded to support West Elk Hockey Association’s Free Hockey for U8 Program, allowing up to 100 players to play for free and have access to free equipment.

Community School Enrichment Program: $2,000

Funds awarded to broaden students’ experiences by providing a variety of free artistic and cultural opportunities as part of the Crested Butte Community School’s Enrichment Program.

City of Gunnison: $5,000

Funds awarded to complement the City’s Parks and Recreation scholarship program by allowing families in need, but who do not qualify for free and reduced lunches, to gain access to recreation programs.

Crested Butte Nordic: $5,000

Funds awarded for the grooming and maintenance of the publicly accessible three kilometer Town Ranch Trail and Trailhead.

Gunnison Middle School: $3,400

Funds provided for scholarships to the Taylor Challenge, an annual outdoor adventure experience developed to connect all 8th grade students to nature and help grow vital relationship building skills.

Gunnison Nordic: $6,000

Funds awarded to support the purchase of grooming equipment used to maintain Gunnison Nordic’s 45 kilometers of free trail.

Adaptive Sports Center: $3,000

Funds awarded to support the Adaptive Sports Center’s summer and winter community programming, including scholarships for approximately 50 local participants, their friends, and families.

Gunnison Trails: $7,500

Funds awarded to support Gunnison Trails’ three-person trail crew. The crew works full-time for 10 weeks, from June through mid-August, maintaining and building trails throughout the Gunnison Basin.

Gunnison Roping Club $2,661

Funds awarded to replace Gunnison Roping Club’s existing stripping chute with a new stripping chute as well as the installation of a bow gate to replace the broken iron gate and particle board.

Gunnison Nordic: $1,580

Funds awarded for the installation of port-a-potties and dog waste pick-up stations at the McCabe’s Trailhead at Hartman Rocks and at the Dos Rios Trail network for the 2019/2020 grooming months.

Gunnison Senior Center: $3,000

Funds awarded to support the Gunnison Senior Center’s inagural 2-day Senior Wiced Wellness Challenge, planned for June, 2020

Gunnison Arts Center: $10,000

Funds awarded for the planning of the Gunnison Arts Center’s new event space, which will include retractable theatre seating and movable gallery walls, enabling them to grow programming to include larger and more varied events.

Gunnison Public Works: $3,271

Funds awarded for the purchase of a Bobcat Soil Conditioner, needed to rehabilitate native or gravel trail surfaces throughout the Gunnison Valley.

Snowsports Foundation: $5,000

Funds awarded to support the Snowsports Foundation’s Ski for PE program, connecting 150+ Gunnison Elementary 4th and 5th graders to outdoor winter recreation.

West Elk Hockey Association: $8,000

Funds awarded to support the recruitment and cost of experienced and skilled hockey coaches for West Elk Hockey Association’s youth teams.

Crested Butte Mountain Bike Association: $8,000

Funds awarded to purchase tools and supplies to increase the Crested Butte Conservation Corps’ efficiency and capacity, and to decrease environmental impact.

Crested Butte Nordic: $8,000

Funds awarded to help cover the cost of grooming, signage and dog waste station maintenance at the Crested Butte Town Ranch trail network.

Crested Butte Mountain Theatre: $3,000

Funds awarded to lengthen and grow Crested Butte Mountain Theatre’s popular YouTheatre youth workshop.

Crested Butte Wildflower Festival: $1,000

Funds awarded for the development and implementation of the Wildflower Festival’s Wildflower Preservation Campaign materials.

Crested Butte School of Dance: $3,000

Funds awarded to support the School of Dance’s Move the Butte production costs.

Gunnison Watershed School District: $3,074

Funds awarded to implement the North Valley Kindergarten Swim Lesson Initiative, providing swim lessons to 50+ Kindergarten participants.

Crested Butte South Property Owners Association: $5,350

Funds awarded to expand the Crested Butte South basketball court to a standard, full-sized court.

Town of Crested Butte: $5,000

Funds awarded for the construction of changing rooms at the Big Mine Ice Arena to support youth and adult hockey.

Crested Butte Land Trust: $4,430

Funding awarded for the fabrication of signage on Peanut Lake Road to promote responsible use of the adjacent trails and conserved land.

Crested Butte Avalanche Center: $3,000

Funds awarded to purchase equipment necessary for improving the Avalanche Center’s outreach events, which strive to strengthen avalanche awareness among locals and visitors.

Tough Enough to Wear Pink: $900

Funds requested for Tough Enough to Wear Pink’s Pink in the Rink women’s hockey tournament.

Gunnison Stewardship Fund: $10,000

A contribution made to the Gunnison Stewardship Fund will be used to support the stewardship of National Forests and other public and conserved lands in the Gunnison Valley.

Gunnison County: $30,000

A contribution was made to the County’s Shady Island Park Project. The Shady Island Park is located just north of Gunnison and will be improved to provide riverside boat access and recreational amenities.

City of Gunnison: $5,000

A contribution was made to the City of Gunnison for the Lazy K Park Project. The new park facility will be located on West Tomichi Avenue and will provide paved pedestrian access to the river, fishing ponds and other recreational amenities. The park and river access will be easily accessible for residents of the Gunnison Valley Senior Care facilities.

Gunnison Stewardship Fund: $25,000

Funds awarded for the East Fork/West Maroon Pass Trailhead Improvement project. The project will include expansion of the parking lot and installation of a composting toilet to accommodate visitors and reduce on-site waste.

Adaptive Sports Center: $4,350

Funds awarded to Adaptive’s Community Kids Program, designed to engage local youth with disabilities in 8-weeks of adaptive recreation programs each summer and winter.

Crested Butte Avalanche Center: $1,000

Funds awarded to repair and maintain the Dan K Memorial Weather Station in Elkton. The station is used to transmit weather data used as part of the Crested Butte Avalanche Center’s daily advisories.

Crested Butte Nordic: $5,000

Funds awarded to help maintain the Magic Meadows Yurt. Improvements included the installation of a new roof, roof liner, sidewalls, new windos, and refinishing the floors.

Gunnison Nordic: $4,800

Funds awarded for the purchase of a new snowmobile for trail grooming.
