MetRec unveils four focus areas to power the next era of recreation development
New mission and vision set the course as MetRec puts community priorities into action
The Gunnison County Metropolitan Recreation District (MetRec) is turning community priorities into action with four focus areas that will shape recreation across the valley: the Annual Recreation Grant Program, Rec Path Design and Development, Indoor Community Space, and Fields and Parks.
The focus areas grow directly out of the six community-identified priorities in MetRec’s 2025 Master Plan, and they come alongside an updated mission and vision that reflect the organization’s growth and its deep commitment to the community.
A mission and vision to match
Guiding all four focus areas are MetRec’s newly adopted mission and vision:
Mission: To connect communities and promote vital recreation opportunities that improve people’s quality of life.
Vision: To become a parks and recreation district that promotes health by building capacity to deliver recreation paths, parks, facilities and programs for our community.
Now focused entirely on recreation, MetRec shaped these statements around its goals and the priorities the community itself identified, giving a clear, energizing direction for future planning, investment and service. At the core of the new mission is connection, in every sense: linking neighborhoods through paths and trails, and bringing people together through shared recreation experiences.
“The new mission and vision reflect how MetRec is evolving into a parks and recreation district through and through. We’re responding to the community’s request to accept responsibility for regional parks and recreation needs and lead our community into an era of achieving what’s possible when we focus on parks and recreation at a regional level.” said Executive Director Derrick Nehrenberg.
The mission and vision were developed jointly by MetRec’s board of directors and staff and will guide the district’s strategic priorities and initiatives in the years ahead.
