MetRec to End Over-the-Air TV Service on June 1, 2026
Gunnison County Metropolitan Recreation District (MetRec) will discontinue its over-the-air (OTA) broadcast television service on June 1, 2026. After that date, district households using an antenna to watch live television will no longer receive service.
Anyone currently using an antenna to watch live TV in MetRec’s service area will need to choose a substitute before June 1, 2026, to avoid interruption.
The shutdown follows an April 2025 Board resolution. Despite extensive efforts to stabilize the region’s aging OTA infrastructure, larger industry forces and economic constraints made continued service unsustainable.
Substitutes available
- Cable TV package
- Satellite TV package
- Connected TV via home internet (streaming)
MetRec staff are available at no cost to help residents compare these options and pick the best fit for their viewing habits and budget. For help, please contact Emily Hatton at 970-641-8725 or emily@gcmetrec.com.
Help with affordability
Because most modern TV substitutes rely on a home internet connection, households should explore aid programs that lower monthly costs:
- FCC Lifeline: $9.25/month discount on phone or internet for qualifying low-income households; can often be stacked with a provider’s need-based discount.
- Provider discounts: many cable, satellite, and internet companies offer reduced pricing for households on government assistance. Ask your provider.
