MetRec

Regional Recreation Master Plan

Why Develop a Master Plan? Why Now?

MetRec is deeply committed to pursuing master planning for regional recreation. Our primary goal is to comprehensively understand our community’s diverse recreation needs, including arts and culture. This understanding will not only enhance our strategic alignment with stakeholders but also clarify our pivotal role in supporting and delivering quality recreation opportunities that significantly improve our citizens’ physical and mental health.

Given MetRec’s 2X revenue increase following the passage of 7D in 2018 and 6B in 2023, the organization needs a master plan to guide current and future budgeting.

Since our region has never conducted a master plan, we decided to embark on regional recreation planning in mid-2023, culminating with the hire of Norris Design as our regional recreation master planning consultant in March 2024.

MetRec District Map

An Inclusive Master Plan

MetRec’s district is subdivided into North and South Subdistricts with different needs. Since we are one valley, we share a common vision with overlapping recreation services and usage. Therefore, early on, MetRec pursued master planning for the entire district.

Master Plan Timeline

MetRec’s master planning effort will occur over the next few years. Our planning has begun and is scheduled to conclude in January 2025. In 2025, the Town of Crested Butte and the City of Gunnison will pursue recreation and land use planning throughout their three-mile corridors along with Gunnison County. We aim to harness these planning efforts to become strategically aligned and clarify MetRec’s pivotal role in supporting and delivering quality recreation opportunities that significantly improve our citizens’ physical and mental health.

We’re eager to hear your voice. Please see our calendar, supporting documents, and contact sections below.

advisory committee

In 2023, MetRec began expanding its North and South Advisory Committees and redefining their roles. One major role is assisting with master planning. The North and South Advisory Committees will meet on the first Monday of every month throughout the master planning process. While we encourage everyone to contact MetRec directly about their needs, we also encourage people to contact the Advisory Committee members to help them advocate for your interests.
